Sail Sydney 2020 Final Day of Racing

2020 Australian Sailing Youth Team (ASYT) members attending Sail Sydney Zoe Dransfield and Maddie McLeay in the 29er and Bridget Conrad and India Gilbert in the 420. Both teams should have been in Brazil for the Youth Sailing World Championships right now. The event was cancelled as a result of the pandemic, there is no doubt they would have been right in the mix for a medal there as well.

“It was disappointing to receive the phone call earlier this year, but our journey does not stop at the Youth Worlds,” said Dransfield

Ashlee and Brayden Daunt brother sister duo too out first place on the final race of the day in the 29er class.

“We had a shocker of in the middle race we didn’t hit it left and we got buried in that race, its easy to get flustered. Our aim is to sail and treat each race as our first race you need to move on after each race and think about the next’. Said Ashlee and Brayden

In the 420 Class, Conrad and Gilbert continued the form from last summer that saw them selected to the ASYT.

“Heading out today our focus was being consistent, head out of the boat and sailing our own race,” said Conrad.

“Both of us have just finished our final year of school, so with three months out of the boat it’s really nice to be back out on the water sailing.”

Laser 4.7 sailor Hamish Gilsenan travelled up from Victoria for the event and has been a shining star in the fleet posting straight bullets (first place finishes). He was followed by Myles Wilson (QLD) and Xavier McLachlan (NSW).

Nacra 15 competitors Archie Gargett and Bella Green have only come together as a team this year in their first year as a team together, but that did not stop them dominating the regatta from start to finish.

“Coming together as a team has worked well given both of us are members of Kurnell Catamaran Club,” said Gargett.

“We are pleased with the result from Sail Sydney, the winds were easterly with medium breeze, which made for good sailing conditions.”

Sail Sydney never fails to offer great opportunities for up-and-coming Australian sailors to compete on the front line with Olympic sailing heroes on Sydney Harbour. Sail Sydney this year has again attracted a large number of competitors in all fleets under a COVID-19 Safe Plan, with many sailors, volunteers and race management embracing the implementation of technology to run a safe and seamless regatta.
