Sail Sydney Fleet To Exceed 300 Competitors

Published Mon 04 Dec 2017

A massive fleet of local, national and international sailors is preparing to take on Sydney Harbour when Sail Sydney starts next week.

More than 300 competitors are expected at Woollahra Sailing Club from December 11, including Optimist and Laser fleets featuring competitors from New Zealand, Malaysia, Macedonia, Hong Kong and Holland, as well as Australia.

The Laser Standard class will be hotly contested with Rio 2016 Olympic gold medallist, Tom Burton, fresh from his win at Sail Melbourne, out to maintain an impressive start to his Aussie summer. Burton will be up against New Zealand’s 2016 Olympic bronze medallist, Sam Meech, who will be making the trip across the ditch.

Strong Laser Radial and 4.7 classes will see some of the best up-and-coming Australian and New Zealand sailors out to prove their supremacy and push for higher representation.

Also hoping to make an impact will be 100 Optimist sailors in Green Fleet, Intermediate and Open Classes, with more entries expected given a favourable long range forecast.  As always, the Opti classes will take centre stage on day five of the regatta with scheduled racing across the final three days, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
